Marched deep into the Libyan mountains, near Thebes , southwest of Deir el-Medina , not far from the valley of kings , known in Arabic Biban el-Harim, the Valley of the Queens is the necropolis of the royal wives, girls, sometimes son of kings of nineteenth and twentieth dynasties. Is known today almost a hundred tombs (98 are numbered), including that of Queen Nefertari , the Great Royal Wife of Ramesses II.

Only three or four tombs are now open to the public:

The first excavations in the valley of the queens were made by John Gardner Wilkinson , then by Jean-Francois Champollion in 1829, Karl Richard Lepsius in 1844, Ernesto Schiaparelli in 1903 who discovered the tomb of Nefertari.

In 1984, thanks to the donation of Germaine Maria Ford , the Valley was cleared and arranged under the control of scientific Christiane Desroches Noblecourt assisted by Christian Leblanc.
