Summary

History

The current limits of the 3rd district date from 1860 , following the law of 16 June 1859 resulting in a new division of Paris into 20 districts. They include the western half of the former 6 th District , the northern half of the former 7 th and part of the former 8 th.

Buildings

The main buildings are now the National Archives , the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers (CNAM), the Picasso Museum , the Carreau du Temple. Also found at 51 rue de Montmorency House Nicolas Flamel , built in 1407, which is the oldest house in Paris (the original owner, vowed University, claimed to possess the philosopher's stone). Finally, the 3rd district is on the edge of the famous Centre Beaubourg or the Pompidou Centre (whose full name is the National Centre for Art and Culture Georges Pompidou ), which explains the development in this district of art galleries interesting.

The borough also has many squares as the square of the Temple , the Garden of the Htel Sal (see Picasso Museum ) or garden Saint-Gilles Grand Huntsman

An exclusive area

There are beautiful buildings and many private mansions , like the Hotel de Montmorency , the Marle Hall or the Hotel d'Albret. From the seventeenth century , the 3rd and 4th districts are inhabited by the nobility (as Madame de Sevigne , hence the name of the current rue de Sevigne passes in both districts). Some streets like the Rue de Bretagne , the rue de Montmorency , the Rue Charlot or rue de Braque are particularly sought.

The 3rd is home to the oldest Chinese community in Paris (between Mayor Street , the Rue du Temple and the Rue des Gravilliers ), mainly composed of migrants from the region of Wenzhou , which arrived in France during the First World War (see Body of Chinese workers ) began to settle during the period between the wars.

Demographics

In 2006 the population was 34 721 inhabitants for 117 hectares, an average density of 29 676 inhabitants / km 2. The district accounts for 1.6% of the population of Paris.

Note: The maximum population of the 3rd district was actually achieved before 1861.
However, the district was created in 1860, it has no reliable data before that date. One sees a steady decline in the number of residents in this district, but the trend is slightly increasing in recent years.
