Matt Groening had only simple sketches of the characters, assuming they would be refined by the production. However, the hosts had just traced his drawings, which gave a coarse appearance to the characters of the first episodes. One of the first tasks of the company Klasky Csupo was to create animated sequences for The Tracey Ullman Show, which led the early Simpson .
In 1989 , a group of production companies adapted The Simpsons into episodes of a half-hour for the network Fox. The team was identical to that of the current animation house Klasky Csupo. Jim Brooks negotiated a clause in the contract with the Fox network deprived of any right to inspect the contents of the series . Matt Groening said his goal in creating the series, was to offer the public an alternative to what he calls "the mainstream trash" . The first episode of a half-hour Christmas mortal (Homer red nose at Quebec ), a special episode Christmas , was released on 17 December 1989 . Some Enchanted Evening " (a romantic evening in Quebec) product along the first episode has aired in May 1990 , as the last episode of the first season , due to animation issues .
In 1992 , Tracey Ullman filed a lawsuit against Fox, claiming that his show was behind the hit series. The complainant claimed a share of the profits of The Simpsons, complaint dismissed by the courts .

Animation
Several international and U.S. studios are responsible for the animation of The Simpsons. When the series was broadcast in the form of short films in the Tracey Ullman Show, it was produced internally by Klasky Csupo . The beginning of the series as we know now causing an increase in workload, Fox subcontracted production while several studios located in South Korea . It is AKOM , to Anivision , of Rough Draft Studios , the U.S. Animation Inc.. , and Toonzone Entertainment . The artists of the American animation studio Film Roman to draw storyboards , design new characters, sets, props and layout of the background. The studio was producing animatics that sends writers to Gracie Films for inspection before the work is shipped abroad. The studios are foreign then tweening , making changes to images, leading to an animation tape ready to be shipped to the United States to be delivered to Fox three to four months later .
For the first three seasons, Klasky Csupo animated The Simpsons in the United States. In 1992 , the company producing the series, Gracie Films , the production has transferred to National Film Roman , which was still producing the series in 2008.
Production in high definition debut at the season 20 and the first episode, Take My Life, Please , was released on 15 February 2009. The transition to HDTV has a new opening sequence . Matt Groening has described the change of complex because it affects the timing and composition of the animation .
Characters
The Simpsons are a typical American family living in the city of Springfield . Homer , the father, works as a security officer at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant , a position at odds with his recklessness. He is married to Marge Simpson , stereotype of the mother and the American housewife. They have three children: Bart , a troublemaker than 10 years, Lisa , a gifted activist 8 years and Maggie , a baby who communicates by sucking a pacifier / A>. While the Simpsons are a dysfunctional family, several episodes examine their relationships and show that they often take care of each other .
Topics
The Simpsons, focusing on a family and his life in a city typically American takes the drama of a sitcom (situation comedy, Quebec) whose boundaries are pushed by the animation. The city of Springfield is the universe of characters, where they face the challenges posed by today's society. Homer working at a nuclear plant, the series addresses environmental issues . The education of Bart and Lisa to Springfield Elementary School allows screenwriters to use controversies in education. And the city with a wide range of TV channels, programs dedicated to children in local news, authors can make fun of the entertainment industry (including themselves) .
Several commentators believe that the series is labeled politically left . Al Jean admitted in an interview that "We . Nevertheless satire spares no box of the political spectrum . The government and large corporations are amoral entities that exploit individuals and any figure of authority (principal, boss, police etc..) comes redeem abuse (or weaknesses) of each other: in the Simpsons, politicians are corrupt, the police jurisdiction, and the clergy doubt . Religion is a recurring theme of the series and most religions have penetrated major.
Setting
The animated series The Simpsons takes place in the fictional American town of Springfield , without any geographical coordinates or reference to a state of the U.S. that would determine its location. Nevertheless, the scholars of the series attempted to determine the location of the city taking into account its characteristics, geography and places nearby. Faced with such questions, the designers proved very elusive . The Springfield is actually very common to the United States , is reported in over half the states . The geography of Springfield and surrounding area comprises the coasts, deserts, vast farmland, tall mountains, or more simply, all that the history of the series requires . Despite this, Matt Groening told that Springfield shared many similarities with Portland, Ore. , the town where he grew up .
Recurring items
Generic
The opening sequence of The Simpsons is one of the most memorable of the series. Almost every episode opens with a zoom on the title The Simpsons, then to the city of Springfield. Then we follow the family members returned home simultaneously. Once home, the Simpson settle on their couch and watch TV without greeting. The credits were created by David Silverman , the first work he did at the start of production of the series . The generic music was composed by musician Danny Elfman in 1989 , after Matt Groening contacted him to ask him a piece of retro style. Danny Elfman, this piece, whose creation took two days, is the most popular of his career .
In this generic four-point change from episode to episode: Bart writing several sentences on the blackboard in the school which is related to the history of the episode, Lisa plays several solos on his saxophone , the famous couch gag changes very often and the display panel of the supermarket cash register also changes the words. This last detail, very visible, was announced in a special episode. On 15 February 2009 , a new opening sequence was set up to support the transition to high definition. The sequence shows the characteristics of the previous one, but it was added many details and characters . The twentieth season saw his eighth episode ( Burns is piqued ) benefit from a generic completely redesigned under the snow and the Christmas theme, the same generic snowy having been drawn earlier for the episode 9 of the eighteenth season ( Kill Gill, Volumes 1 and 2 ).
Halloween special episodes
The special episode of Halloween (The Horror Show) has become an annual tradition. The action then abandons its usual surroundings to those of fantasy , of horror or science fiction , including the classics are often parodied and .
The Simpson's Horror Show ( France ) or Halloween Special (in Quebec ) was released for the first time in 1990 during season 2. The format never varied: three short stories in time for a regular episode .
Although designed for Halloween, Horror Show will have seen in recent years, some episodes aired later due to a contract between the Fox to the World Series of Major League Baseball .
Humor
Humor thrives cultural references , the vast variety allows the series to reach the widest audience . They often belong to the world of cinema , the television , the music , of literature , of science or the history . The facilitators regularly add jokes and other visual gags in the background through bits of absurd or humorous text on billboards, newspapers, etc. . Often the public does not track these gags in the first airing of the episode .
Series uses the "mannerisms" and many characters have at least one individual , as the famous " D'oh! "abatement of Homer Simpson , the "Excellent ... "By Charles Montgomery Burns or even "Ha-ha! "Mocking Nelson Muntz. Those of Bart , such as "Ay, caramba!", "No problemo!" and "Fuck you shampoo! "(In France , "Eat of the mud" in Quebec , "Eat my shorts" in the original), were printed on t-shirt at the beginning of the series . However, Bart is rarely used these last two sentences after they were becoming popular. The episode Bart Gets Famous turns even ridiculous humor based on such repeats .
Color characters
Two explanations have been advanced to answer the question "why are the Simpsons yellow? . The first comes from David Silverman, who gave an interview in 1998. According to him, if the Simpsons are yellow, it's for that hair - Blond - Lisa, Bart and Maggie are confused with their faces, what was expected as the front of Bart was very high. The second explanation argues that the color yellow attracts the attention of viewers and allows them to quickly identify the series .
The designers of the series have also thought about the color green but it was abandoned because it was more expensive than yellow .

Influence and legacy
Expressions
A number of neologisms from The Simpsons have entered the popular jargon . Mark Liberman, director of the Linguistic Data Consortium, remarked that "the Simpsons have apparently taken over from Shakespeare and the Bible , as the largest source of cultural expressions and slogans . The most famous expression is that of Homer when he is annoyed: " D'oh! ". The term is so ubiquitous that it is now listed in the Oxford Dictionary Franais , but without the apostrophe . Dan Castellaneta says he borrowed the phrase from James Finlayson , an actor from the early comedies of Laurel and Hardy , who declared in a tone more elongated and whining. The director of The Simpsons told Castellaneta to shorten the noise, and it became the famous exclamation in the TV series .
The description of the French by the gardener Willie (Willie the janitor in Quebec ) as "cheese eating monkeys" was used by the chronicler of the National Review Jonah Goldberg, in 2003, after France's opposition to the proposed invasion of Iraq. The term was then quickly extended to other journalists . "Cromulent", a word used in The True False Hero , appeared in the Webster Dictionary in English . "Kwyjibo", a false word Scrabble invented by Bart in Bart the genius , was used as one of the pseudonyms of Melissa worm . "And I, on behalf of all, welcome our new insect masters," a phrase used by Kent Brockman in Homer in space , has generated a variety of phrases commonly used . Variants of this phrase is used to express Brockman submission fantasy, usually in a humorous purpose . It has already been used in the media, such as in the magazine New Scientist . The dismissive term "Meh," which was popularized by the television series , appeared in the a href = "HarperCollins" alt = "HarperCollins"> Franais Collins Dictionary in 2008 . During the 1980s , experts considered that the only entertainment programs tailored to children were too expensive to produce in order to broadcast prime time. The Simpsons have changed this view . The use by Korean animation studios tweening (interpolation) and other processes have made the episodes cheaper. The success of The Simpsons and the lower production cost prompted television stations to take chances on other animated series . This led to a boom in the 1990s, new entertainment programs in prime time , including South Park , Family Guy , King of the Hill (Henry's worst gang in Quebec), Futurama and Occupation critical .
"The Simpsons created an audience for a prime-time animation that had not been there for many years. Basically, I think they have reinvented the wheel. They created what is, in many ways - you can classify it as that - a whole new medium. "
- Seth MacFarlane , creator of Griffin
Later, South Park paid homage to the Simpsons episode with the Simpsons have already done .
The Simpsons has also influenced programs like Malcolm , who started on 9 January 2000 the United States in the time slot after The Simpsons , . Malcolm has the feature to use the use of sight gags and do not use recorded laughter , unlike most sitcoms. Ricky Gervais said The Simpsons have had a major influence on his comedy British "The Office" that does not laughter recorded .
On 10 January 2010 , during the twenty years of the series, Fox aired a documentary titled The Simpsons The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special - In 3-D! On Ice! , following the 450th episode . Directed by Morgan Spurlock , he returns, among other things, its cultural impact in the history of television .
Reception
First success
The Simpsons was the first television series of the Fox network to appear in a ranking of the thirty most-watched programs in the United States on a full season ( 1989 - 1.99 thousand ) . While the seasons are centered on Homer, Bart is the protagonist in the first three seasons. In 1990, Bart has quickly become one of the most popular characters from television, which gave the name "Bartmania" , , , . He becomes the character present on the Simpson-products such as t-shirts. In the early 1990s , millions of T-shirts were sold Representative Bart , and up to one million were sold in just a few days . Thinking that Bart is a bad model, several U.S. public schools have banned T-shirts representing the next titles like "I'm Bart Simpson. Who the hell are you? "(I'm Bart Simpson. Who the hell are you?) Or" Underachiever ('And Proud of it, man! ")' (Sub-efficient , , . Derivatives of Simpson have sold very well and generated two billion U.S. dollars during the first fourteen months of sales .
Due to the success of the series in the summer of 1990, FOX decided to change the time slot for Simpson, moving from Sunday at 20 pm ( Eastern Time ) on Thursday , at the same time. It has to compete with the Cosby Show on NBC , series receiving good ratings at the time , . During the summer, several newspaper articles were published, describing the supposed rivalry "Bill vs. Bart" , .
Because of its popularity, Bart was often a member of the Simpson family as highlighted in advertisements for the series, even for episodes in which he was not involved in the main plot. The Simpsons has been acclaimed by many critics, describing the series as "the most disrespectful and least apologetic "to the antenna . In a review of the series dating to 1990, Ken Tucker, the magazine Entertainment Weekly , described the Simpson family as "the American family in that it is more complex, represented by simple cartoons. It is this clever paradox that millions of people are turning away from three major television networks Sunday night to watch The Simpsons . . Ken Tucker has also described Simpson as a "pop-cultural phenomenon, an animated series in prime time that brings the whole family . .
Long-term success
On 9 February 1997 , The Simpsons surpassed The Flintstones as the animated series in prime time that lasted the longest in the United States , with the episode " Itchy, Scratchy and Poochie (Itchy & Scratchy and Poochie at Quebec ). In 2004 , The Simpsons have replaced The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952-1966) as a sitcom that lasted the longest in the United States . In October 2004 , Scooby-Doo briefly surpassed The Simpsons in terms of number of episodes, becoming the series most in American . However, network executives in April 2005 , were again canceled Scooby-Doo, which finished with 371 episodes. The Simpsons have thus reclaimed the title with 378 episodes at the end of their seventeenth season . In May 2007 , The Simpsons hit their 400th episode at the end of the eighteenth season. While The Simpsons have a record number of episodes of a series of American animation, other animated series, not American, have exceeded . For example, the Japanese anime series Sazae-san has almost two thousand episodes under his belt .
The year 2007 marked the twentieth anniversary of the franchise Simpson. During the twentieth season ( 2008 - in 2009 ), the series was tied with Gunsmoke as the American television series that lasted the longest. However, a total of 635 episodes of Gunsmoke, which far exceeds the episodes of The Simpsons, who can not reach that number until about the twenty-ninth season, under normal programming , .
In July 2009 , The Simpsons have entered the Guinness Book of Records as the sitcom that aired the longest in the world, dethroning The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet .
Awards
The Simpsons has won dozens of awards since the beginning of the series, which twenty-four Emmy Awards Twenty-six Annie Awards and a Peabody Award . In an edition of 1998 , aimed to celebrate the greatest achievements of twentieth century in the arts and entertainment, Time Magazine has included The Simpsons the best television series of the century . In the same issue, Time included Bart Simpson in the Time 100 , the list of the hundred most influential people of the century . Bart was the only fictional character on the list. On 14 January 2000 , The Simpsons received a star on the Walk of Fame of Hollywood . Furthermore, viewers of British television Channel 4 The Simpsons elected head of two surveys: in 2001 the hundred largest television programming for children and in 2005, leads the ranking of the hundred largest Cartoons . In 2008 , the animated series was placed in first position ranking of the hundred emissions last twenty-five years of the magazine Entertainment Weekly and Empire has named greatest television show of all time .
Criticisms and controversies
The rebellious nature of Bart , which often is not sanctioned, has led some parents and conservatives to consider him a bad role model for children , . In schools, educators have argued that Bart was "a threat to learning" because of its "poor performance which he is proud" and its negative attitude toward education . Others have described as "egocentric, aggressive and mean-spirited" . In an interview in 1991, Bill Cosby described Bart as a bad role model for children, calling him "angry, confused and frustrated." In response, Matt Groening said: "It sums up Bart. Most people are in a struggle to be normal, Bart believes that normality is very boring and does things that others would do, but they dare not do . "On 27 January 1992 , the U.S. president George HW Bush said: "We will continue to try to strengthen the American family, making it the most American families like the Waltons and less to Simpson . The authors responded sarcastically as a brief excerpt released three days later, before the replay of my friend Michael Jackson (Lobot-Homer in Quebec ), in which Bart said "Hey, we're like the Waltons. We also pray for the end of the crisis , . .
Several episodes have been controversial. The Simpsons have visited the Australia in Australia Bart cons ( season 6 , 1995 ) and Brazil in Adventures in Brazil (Rio Lisa dream in Quebec ) ( season 13 , 2002 ) , each episode has sparked controversy and prompted a backlash in the countries visited . In the case of Brazil, the Tourism Board of Rio de Janeiro , which argued that the city was described as harboring a high crime, kidnappings, slums and infestations of rats and monkeys, even went up Fox to threaten legal action . The Meridian ( Season 9 , 1997 ) is one of the most controversial episodes of The Simpsons. Many fans and critics reacted negatively to the revelation that the principal Seymour Skinner , a recurring character since the first season, was an impostor. The episode has been criticized by Matt Groening and Harry Shearer , who provides the original voice of Principal Skinner. In an interview in 2001 , Shearer noted that after reading the script, he told the authors: "It's so arbitrary, free and disrespectful to the public . "
The quality of the series in decline?
Criticisms about the first episodes of The Simpsons commended the series for its humor, realism and intelligence , . In the late 1990's , the tone and emphasis of the series have however begun to change. Some critics have called the series so "tired" . In 2000 , some longtime fans were disappointed by the series and have pointed to the fact that the main characters behaved more and more stupid , . Author Douglas Coupland described the new series criticisms as nonsense, saying that "The Simpsons made no awkwardness in fourteen years, so there is little chance they do now . . Mike Scully , who was the writer of the series of the season 9 for season 12 , has particularly been criticized , .
In 2003 , to celebrate the three hundredth episode, Homer goes to pay (Bart House in Quebec), USA Today published two articles about the Simpsons: A list of the ten episodes of the series selected by the webmaster of the site Fan Simpsons Archive and a top fifteen by the authors of The Simpsons themselves . The most recent episode cited in the list of the site is Homer's Phobia , dating from 1997. That the list of authors dating from 2000, is behind the laughter (Biographies: The Simpsons in Quebec). In 2004 , Harry Shearer criticized what he saw as the declining quality of the series: "I consider the last three seasons as one of the worst, while season 4 very good to me now . . In response, Dan Castellaneta said: "I do not agree . .
Hearings down
The Simpsons try to maintain a large audience while attracting new fans. While the first season has averaged 13.4 million viewers per episode in the U.S. , the twentieth season has collected an average of 7.1 million viewers. In an interview with April 2006 , Matt Groening said: "Honestly, I have not seen the end of Simpson. I think it is possible that the series becomes too financially burdensome ... but, right now, I think she is as creative as before, or even more. The animation is incredibly detailed and imaginative stories depict things that we've never done before. So creative that there is no reason to stop . "
This alleged decline in quality in any case can be linked with a sharp decline in audiences in recent seasons :
| Season | Average audience in the U.S. (millions) |
|---|---|
| 15 | 11,1 |
| 16 | 10,14 |
| 17 | 9,58 |
| 18 | 9,15 |
| 19 | 8,26 |
| 20 | 7,06 |
| 21 | 7,41 |
Thus, in early 2009, the five worst episodes of the series by hearing all belonged to the twentieth season :
- Manicures for 4 women (season 20): 5.16 million
- Lisa Queen of the drama (season 20): 5.75 million
- A prince in New Barley (Season 20): 5.86 million
- My father was wrong (Season 20): 5.94 million
- Maggie disappears (Season 20): 5.97 million
