The system Rolli palaces (in Italian is a legally established public accommodation for the distinguished guests welcomed by the Republic of Genoa from the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

History

In 1576 , a decree of the Senate instituted an official list (Lista dei Rolli) of "public accommodation residences" requiring owners of aristocratic palace built in the Strada Nuova , to provide hospitality in the name of the oligarchic republic for state visitors. At the end of the sixteenth century, other buildings constructed elsewhere in the city are enrolled - such as the via Balbi - to reach the number of 150 palaces. That number dropped to a hundred buildings rising to 200 by the end of the eighteenth century. Rolli known in the five years 1576 , 1588 , 1599 , 1614 and 1664 were classified into four categories (I, II, III, IV) Bussoli say, this classification was used to identify buildings according to their prestige. The palaces of Class I defects were reserved for kings, princes and cardinals, II governors and ambassadors, categories III and IV small feudal.
