The Strade Nuove (in French : new roads) is an expression of Italian which means an outstanding example overall residential urban roads built by successive phases of the sixteenth to the eighteenth century in the city of Genoa.
Description
The ensemble is composed mainly of via Garibaldi , the via Balbi and Via Cairoli. Built by wealthy Genoese families (Pallavicini, Spinola Doria Lomellino Grimaldi) on an allotment awarded by the public authority, the development of these new urban areas had, however, dedicated to providing public accommodation to guests mark of the Republic , by decree of 1576 , institutionalizing the system of palace Rolli.
High architectural value, the first Strada Nuova, now Via Garibaldi, built by the architect Galeazzo Alessi between 1551 and 1583 , above the old town in an area with the panoramic view and that symbolized the ruling elite Genoese. In 1,601 - 1,618 , according to the same model, a second Strada Nuova, now Via Balbi, opens in promoting the development of residential architecture to the west, always on the edge of the medieval quarter. Finally, in 1 778 - 1 786 , the drilling of a new street last Nuovissima Strada, now Via Cairoli, connecting the first two Strade Nuove (Via Garibaldi and Via Balbi). Subsequently, this urban is associated with the medieval part of the city while keeping intact its place in this context.
The Strade Nuove and the medieval part of the fabric are listed in 2006 , the list of World Heritage of Humanity established by the UNESCO as well as many outstanding buildings recognized by the system Rolli palaces.
