The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 (with Latin names).

Stabiae is an old city Roman , located near Pompeii and affecting the current Castellammare di Stabia , 16 km from Vesuvius. This city was largely destroyed, like Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis by two meters of ejecta fell during the eruption of 79 AD. AD. Stabiae is known for its Roman baths and its frescoes.

The excavations Stabiae started in 1749 and continues today.

Summary

History

Primavera di Stabiae

Originally a small port since the sixth century BC. AD , it has always been challenged by the largest port of Pompeii. The city was destroyed by Lucius Cornelius Sulla on 30 April 89 BC. BC during the Social War. The Roman author, naturalist and admiral Pliny the Elder reported that the city had been rebuilt and became a resort for wealthy Romans. He also reported that the luxurious villas spread across the coast for several miles, all with a superb panoramic view across the bay of Naples.


The eruption of 79 AD. AD

As reported by Pliny the Younger , Pliny the Elder (his uncle) was on the other side of the bay, Miseno , when the eruption began. It crossed the bay galley , partly to observe the eruption in more detail and in part to rescue the people from the sea unable to dock because of volcanic debris along the coast, it continued to south to stab and died the next day.

The Villa Ariadne was a rich house beautifully situated facing the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius. We still see a whole system of ramps that allowed residents of the villa have access to the sea

This villa is composed of two parts:

  • pars urbana, organized around the atrium, indicating that the villa had its origins mainly in productive use.
  • pars rustica organized around the peristyle.

The bonded area (ergastulum) is of great importance, it covers the entire residential block to the east

At the beginning of the empire is a remarkable spa with a caldarium, a laconicum and a small porch. Two triclinia overlook a garden, viridarium. The huge quadrangle allowed the master particularly challenging to construct a gymnasium complementing the spa district.

Villa San Marco, built during the reign of Augustus, was built on two levels in a refined architecture and decorated with gardens and swimming pools, would also be a luxurious country villa. In the first century AD, was the original nucleus grows by adding a large garden with a portico, loggia and the installation of a swimming pool surrounded by two rows of plane trees.

The villa is divided into neighborhoods of different orientation. Opposite, the neighborhood pool with nymphaeum semicircle and a huge triclinium overlooking the bay, right on U-shaped gantry which lacks the gallery right, left the neighborhood baths, slanting top the atrium, the oldest part of which opened on a street of ancient Stabiae.

It is particularly worth visiting including the caldarium in the spa area where you can see a very effective device to keep the water hot, the huge kitchen with a school of cooking, and apartments nymphaeum each nymphaeum, one fully exposed to the sun for the winter, the other in the dark in the summer.
