History

The current limits ^of the 2nd district date from 1860 , following the law of 16 June 1859 resulting in a new division of Paris into 20 districts. They include part of the former ² nd District , part of the old ^3rd and part of the former 5 ^th.

In 2009 the population was 21 417 inhabitants for 99 hectares, an average density of 21 633 inhabitants per km. The district represents about 1% of the population of Paris.

Note: The maximum population ^of the 2nd district was actually achieved before 1861.
However, the district was created in 1860, it has no reliable data before that date.

• Town Hall, 2 ^nd District, 8 rue de la Banque. The architect Paul Lelong is responsible for the drilling of the Bank Street and construction of public buildings which were the border: the Hotel du Timbre and egistration, the barracks of the Guards of Paris and the mayor ^of the 2nd borough. Died in 1846 without having completed these buildings will be finished by other architects. The town hall was completed by his assistant Alphonse Franois Joseph Girard between 1847 and 1852. The wedding hall was designed by Charles Gustave Huillard , a student of Victor Baltard. The paintings in the room were executed by the painter Georges Moreau de Tours.
