Santander is a town and a port city Spain , capital of the autonomous community and historic region of Cantabria , located on the Cantabrian coast , north of the country. Bounded by the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Camargo Bezana and it closes to the north, the bay that bears his name and is part of the club's most beautiful bays in the world.

A tourist or resort marked the centenary beaches in the "suburbs" of Sardinero, the promenade and the La Magdalena peninsula and enjoyed the layout of the way of Saint Jacques de Compostela.
On 3 November 1893 , the explosion of steam Cabo Machichaco who was responsible for 51 tons of dynamite caused the death of 590 people and injured 525 others, report that in fact the worst civilian tragedy nineteenth century in Spain.
During the Spanish Civil War , the city was at stake in the Battle of Santander and was finally taken by the nationalists and the Corpo Truppe Voluntari on 28 August 1937.
The old city was almost entirely rebuilt in 1941 following a major fire known as the "Andalusian" because he started street Cadiz Street and ended in Seville.
The maritime tradition is due to increased trade between Spain and America. Large shipyards have developed there.

Culture

The Palais des Festivals hosts the annual International Festival of Santander (FIS).

The city hosts a jazz festival in late July and a big festival of music and dance in August.
Santander is also home to the University of Cantabria (UNICAN) and the International University Menndez Pelayo (UIMP), famous for its summer courses.
The major museums of the city are the Maritime Museum of Cantabria (Museo Martimo del Cantbrico), the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts (Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes) and the Regional Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria (Museo Regional de Prehistoria y Arqueologa de Cantabria).
The city was a candidate to obtain the title of European Capital of Culture for the year 2016 physiognomy of the city

The main buildings of interest is the cathedral, composed of the crypt of Christ and the main temple on top, rebuilt several times. The interior contains the tomb of the great scholar Menndez Pelayo carved by Victorio Macho.

The historic seat of the Bank of Santander , now one of the largest in the world wins with an arch in the center of the building. The City Hall is located on what was once the site of Generalissimo and on which sat the equestrian statue of Francisco Franco from 1964 and was last up in the Peninsula since the withdrawal from those of Madrid and Guadalajara in March 2005. The Palacete del Embarcadero, which offers views over the bay, Club Royal Regatta, the promenade and gardens Pereda Porticada Plaza (at the entrance to which is now installed the statue of the hero of the war Independence Spanish , Pedro Velarde , who died on 2 May 1808 ), Plaza de la Esperanza (covered market), the Museum of Fine Arts and Library Menndez Pelayo sights are a must. More recent, the Palais des Festivals is due to the architect Francisco Senz de Oiza and the Maritime Museum of Cantabria (MMC) are situated overlooking the bay.

The peninsula of Magdalena is home to the royal palace of the same name, opened a summer residence in 1913 by Alfonso XIII , a small zoo that houses including seals and penguins, and finally the replicas of the boats that were used to Francisco de Orellana to explore the Amazon. Further, the district Sardinero, its two main beaches and gardens, home to the Palais des Expositions, the football stadium where the changing Real Racing Club Santander , the Sports Centre opened in 2003 and which are also held concerts. Further north, finally, golf at Cabo Menor and the lighthouse at Cabo Mayor overlooking beautiful cliffs.

Its importance is enhanced by the Way of Saint Jacques and the nearby caves of Altamira , both declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Local cuisine

A cocido montas.

The configuration of the coast of this city can enjoy a wide variety of fish and seafood of high quality, both in luxurious restaurants in modest places near the port. The sardines or cocido montas are typical dishes of the region.

Economy

The biggest employers in the city are the University Hospital Marques de Valdecilla, Cantabria University and Banco Santander , one of the largest banks in the world whose headquarters are still located in the city.

Transport

Santander is connected to Torrelavega and other towns in northern Spain and Cantabria by Ferrocarriles de va estrecha (BEANS). It is also linked to many Spanish cities by Renfe , which also provides commuter rail service (cercanas). Links AVE with Madrid via Palencia , and Bilbao are planned.

By sea, the company Brittany Brittany Ferries provides a weekly service with Portsmouth and Plymouth. Finally, the international airport of Santander, more commonly known as Airport Parayas, companies serving Madrid , Barcelona , Seville , Alicante , Valencia , Malaga , Palma de Mallorca , Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. International connections concern Rome , London ( Stansted ), Bergamo , Frankfurt am Main , Paris , Amsterdam , Dublin , Dusseldorf and Brussels.

The last statue of Franco in place on Spanish territory is located in Melilla and is not the head of state but the soldier who led the fighting against the troops of Abdelkrim El Khattabi during the Rif war. It should also be removed from public space, in 2009 , to join the military museum in the city.
