San Leucio is the joint of Caserta in Campania. It developed primarily around a silk factory founded in 1778 by Charles de Bourbon , King of the Two Sicilies. It belongs to the World Heritage of UNESCO since 1997.

History

San Leucio was originally a chapel atop a hill north of Caserta. A hunting lodge, called the Belvedere, was built by the lords of Caserta, the Acquaviva, the sixteenth century. This domain was purchased by Charles of Bourbon in 1773. The building was converted between 1776 and 1778.

In 1778, the king and his son Ferdinand I of Two Sicilies , decided to embark on the production of silk. The observation tower is transformed into a factory, Francesco Collecini, the architect of the king, drawing new industrial buildings. Several equipment manufacturers are needed to built all around: a spin and buildings to house the looms began in 1783, but also housing for workers silky divided into two districts, San Fernando and San Carlo, whose construction began in 1786 and a school, housing for teachers.

In 1789, a regulation is promulgated by the king, to govern the operation of the city called "City of San Leucio Royal (Real Colonia di San Leucio). This regulation, which is entitled Origin della popolazione di S. Leucio e suoi fino al giorno gradually glue leggi d'oggi al buon governo di corrispondenti essa di Re Ferdinando IV delle Sicily, blending new ideas of the Enlightenment and proto-socialism: the importance given to women through the elimination of the dots or uniform for all workers. A proposed extension of the city called "Ferdinandopolis, designed by the same architect and taking a circular shape, was abandoned following the French occupation of the country in 1799.
