The term "rock art" means all works of art at large (without aesthetic appreciation) made by man on rocks, usually outdoors. It corresponds to the English-speaking rock art , and most authors now opposed to the parietal art (art on the walls of caves and ) but also the furniture art (which can move) and the art on block. This form of art occupies a major part in the prehistoric art. His practice was continued until the present it is not the result of an ethnic group or a particular culture, but has spread around the world using a universal distribution.

According prehistorian Emmanuel Anati , there are 45 million rock paintings on rocks and in caves, on 170 000 sites in 160 countries Geographic distribution
