Rene Cagnat
Ren-Louis-Victor Cagnat, born 10 October 1852 and died in 1937 , is a historian French specialist of Latin epigraphy and history of Roman Africa.
On the death of his father, Leo Renier , a family friend, who supports his education. Under the influence of Ernest Desjardins , he became interested in epigraphy. He is campaigning archaeological Tunisia and became professor of epigraphy in 1883. It was in 1885 he published his famous Course of Latin epigraphy.
In 1887 , he succeeded to the chair of Desjardins epigraphy and Roman antiquities at the College de France. In 1888 , he founded The Year epigraphic. In 1895 he was elected member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-lettres , he was permanent secretary in 1916 to his death.
