Registering Duenos

Hermes 16 illustration1.png

The inclusion of Duenos is one of the oldest known texts in Latin. She is represented by one hundred twenty-eight letters written to the tip around the outer sides of a trio of vases, also called kernos, rounded and connected together by a single strut of clay. Discovered by Heinrich Dressel in 1880 on Hill Quirinal at Rome , the kernos are preserved in the National Museums in Berlin (Catalogue No. 30894.3) and its inclusion was the subject of much research, but its meaning remains partially obscure. Its date, which is not accurately known, is probably between the seventh century and fourth century BC. AD.

Text

We give here three versions of the text. The first transcribed following letters appearing on the vase, the second between words and puts macron helping them understand the meaning, and the third a translation into classical Latin given by Vine. We notice a gap in the second pass, the more obscure.
