Rainforest
The rainforest is the forest regions characteristic of tropical and equatorial. This term hide very different situations, ranging from forests called deciduous seasonal compounds rather scattered trees growing under tropical savanna to the forest called rainforest areas of dense equatorial climate , through the relatively cool forests clouds.
Tropical forests cover 1 681 million hectares of which about 900 million in South America , 500 million in Africa and 260 million in Asia.
No or little affected by the latest glaciation , are the richest forests of the world in terms of biodiversity , but are sometimes threatened by conversion into areas agricultural or forestry , and locally by deforestation , the exploitation , the ecological fragmentation and / or fire.
Summary |
Description
The rainforest can be dry or wet, depending on the type of climate and soil type. It is estimated that all the world's tropical forests contain at least 75.2% of living species, animal and plant species. Over two thirds of these forests are grouped in only three countries: Brazil ( Amazon ), the Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia.
They thus represent a major stake in protecting biodiversity. Moreover, only two tropical forests in the world not belonging to a third world country or developing forest are Australian and French Guiana with over 90% of the territory is composed of primary forest, which represents a of the largest intact areas in the world.
Protection
It can be enforced through national parks , local by nature reserves , under the Rio Convention on Biodiversity , as countries could not agree in 1992 , or since an international convention on protection Forest. Some eco-labels such as FSC also contribute to their protection , where they are established.
Planting and preserving tropical forests could slow global warming , while planting forests at high latitudes could contribute to global warming Main types of ecosystems, tropical forest References
