The name of Quetzal (or Royal Couroucou) designates four species of birds of the neotropical genus and family trogons.
His name is included in that of the Mexican god Quetzalcoatl , which means "feathered serpent" or "quetzal serpent", which is one of the forms. Each year, at the end of the nesting (nest building), the bird loses its feathers grow back the following year.
