Propitiatory
The mercy seat was the lid of the Ark of the Covenant.
His description is in the book of Exodus chapter 25, in the orders of Yahweh given to Moses for building the tabernacle. In Hebrew , the word atonement is the same as cover, the root conveys the idea of covering physically but also atone.
The mercy seat is made of gold pure. Its dimensions are about 125 cm long and 75 cm wide. At both ends, a cherub sort of atonement. The cherubim made of beaten gold, face, looking at the cover, and spread their wings covering the mercy seat. (For more detail see Exodus , 25:17-22)
Places of manifestation of the Lord on top of the mercy seat between the cherubim ( Exodus , 25:22, Leviticus , 16:2).
Once a year, the mercy seat was sprinkled with atoning blood by the priest for purification of sins ( Leviticus , 16:14-17)
In the New Testament , the apostle Paul made mention of the mercy seat, through the action of Christ in the sanctuary ( Hebrews , chapter 9).
