Piazza del Duomo of Pisa, known as Piazza dei Miracoli (in French : is the artistic center and tourist largest Pisa.

Entered in UNESCO's World Heritage since 1987 , one can admire the monuments that form the center of religious life in the city. In the words of Gabriele D'Annunzio , these monuments are miracles because of their beauty and originality: the Baptistery , the Cemetery , the cathedral and its bell tower, the tower of Pisa. It was in 1910 that D'Annunzio uses the term in his novel Forse che s, forse che no, "The Ardea Roteo nel cielo di Cristo sul prato dei Miracoli" ("The Ardea whirls in the sky of Christ above the meadow of Miracles ")

The Piazza dei Miracoli term is often confused with the Campo dei Miracoli. The latter being a field of imaginary adventures of Pinocchio , the puppet which will sow his four gold coins with the Fox and the Cat.

The square was covered with a large lawn in the twentieth century is entirely pedestrian. It is bounded on its north and west sides by a wall. The maintenance of the site, as well as monuments, has been entrusted to the Opera della Pisana Primaziale.

The monumental cemetery

The Cemetery

The monumental cemetery is located at the northern edge of the square. This is a cemetery completely surrounded by walls. According to a legend to that typical for similar buildings in Europe, we say that the cemetery has grown around a layer of soil brought by boat from the Holy Land during the Second Crusade by Archbishop Ubaldo de 'Lanfranchi.

The original plan made by Giovanni di Simone in 1278, is a cloister elongated Gothic. It was not completed until 1464 due to the crisis caused by the defeat of Pisa during the Battle of Meloria in 1284. The outer wall is composed of 43 arches and two blind doors.

The walls were once covered with frescoes , which were conducted between 1360 and the seventeenth century :

On 27 July 1944 , the incendiary bombs launched by the Allies set fire to the roof of the building and damage very seriously the frescoes. Since 1945, restoration works are still ongoing.

Other buildings

  • Piazza dei Miracoli is closed north and west by medieval walls.
  • The south side is occupied by the long Spedale della Misericordia structure, which houses the museum including sinopis.
  • Beside the tower stands the Museum Opera del Duomo.
