A pedestal (plural pedestals) is an insulated support for receiving a column, a statue, a bust or a great piece of art and decoration (vases, candelabra, stele).
In Western countries, the pedestal outdoors is most often composed, from bottom to top:
- a base (or base) molded, often made of slab , possibly preceded by a holiday
- a ledge which is part of the heel and trim are prominent
This name comes from the Italian piedestallo (feet, foot and stallo, support), the base saying zoccolo.
There is talk of a pedestal (from the Italian pieduccio) or scabellon to designate a small pedestal, generally intended to be a bust or statuette.
In areas of Han China and the countries sinicized, the pedestals in the open air are very varied. The steles are often based on a pedestal shaped stone turtle, symbol of longevity, called Bixi , Guifu () Baxi gold () . It is the largest stele bearing on a turtle in the Stele Pavilion of the Ming Tombs. The turtle-shaped pedestals may also bear the image of "a crane or a heron, symbolizing the emotional and lasting protection, the two animals together symbolizing mutual support. Pedestals interiors can be lacquered wood, porcelain, etc..
