Parthia was a region in north-eastern Iranian plateau , the former satrap of the empire of the Achaemenid , the birthplace of the Parthian Empire, which controls the Iranian plateau and intermittently Mesopotamia between -190 and 224.

The frontiers of Parthia are the mountains of the Kopet-Dag to the north (now the border between Iran and Turkmenistan ) and the desert of Dasht-e Kavir in the south. To the west lies the Medes in the north-west of Hyrcania , north-east of Margiana and south-east of Arie. This region is fertile and well watered during antiquity, and also has large forests at that time.

The texts Assyrian mention a country named Partakka Partukka or in the VII centuryBC. AD. At an unknown period, its inhabitants have been subjected by the Medes , who ruled the first Persian empire before being overthrown by Cyrus the Great in 550 BC. BC Parthia then belonged to the Achaemenid Empire during the next two centuries.
