Go quickly and come back later is a novel by Fred Vargas issued three in January 2001 by Editions Viviane Hamy and having received the Booksellers' Prize the following year. The novel was adapted to film in 2007 with the film Pars on Us from Regis Wargnier.
Summary
While an old Breton sailor, Joss Le Guern, knows some success in containing the oldest profession of town crier, Commissioner Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg is alerted by a woman worried about the presence of large "4" black and reversed subtitled three letters of CLT (Cito Longe Tarde) on the doors of her building. He became curious when a second building suffered the same fate which are added yet big "4" black letters, and in turn really worried when the auctioneer, helped an old scholar (Decambrais), comes him return messages left by a mysterious stranger.
Messages announcing the return of the scourge of God (the plague ), spreading panic in Paris when the great plague made great ravages. Soon, when the case begins to be known, it becomes increasingly difficult for Adamsberg to continue his investigation as the "4" made from seed mingle with those panicky. And soon, more and more people come to the auction of the Guern Joss continues to say "special announcements" sower.
Gradually, these two cases will join in a single tortuous riddle. Commissioner Adamsberg will then conduct a lengthy investigation and attempt to regain the title sponsor of all these messages. The protagonists will study the scourge of God (the plague).
