Palestra
The Palestra was, in ancient Greece , where they practiced fighting and other physical exercises.
Unlike the gym , the arena does not have a racetrack. These buildings were constructed at the expense of the state or a benefactor (rich and generous donor), as was much in antiquity. The gymnasia were under the direction of a pdotribe. More than just a sports facility, the arena is a center of Greek education and it is a central building in the Greek culture.
It will be exported in this respect in all areas of influence of Greek culture, and we find commonly in Asia Minor, but also in the Middle East , that is to say, in all places where the Greeks have exercised their cultural hegemony. It is part of the Greek conception of man made, design recovered later by the Romans and Juvenal synthesized by the "mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a sound body).
