The building occupies part of the site of the former factory Savonnerie carpet , transferred in 1826 in the precincts of the Manufacture des Gobelins. In the 1930's , this place belonged to the military handling.
In 1934 , faced with the smallness of the Muse du Luxembourg , and the abandonment of the project of Auguste Perret for a city museum at the site of the Trocadero , the state decided to build a national museum of modern art. An agreement with the City of Paris, which owns the land, says the program's operation, a municipal museum of modern art, which should be an annex to the Muse du Petit Palais.
The architectural competition was won by Jean-Claude Dondel , Andre Aubert , Paul Viard and Dastugue Marcel , whose project is chosen over 127 others, including those of Le Corbusier and Mallet-Stevens. They build a building of sober and monumental, consisting of two perfectly symmetrical wings separated by a fountain and stairs. The glass ceiling may shed light on most of the parts so zenith with natural light. Unfortunately, management is never completed, including the conference room under the upper terrace will never open.
The building gets a major outdoor decor sculpted bas-relief of Alfred Janniot , bronze statue of Antoine Bourdelle representing France, metopes of Marcel Gaumont west side of Leon Baudry east side, bronze doors of the blacksmith Szabo with reliefs of Andre Bizette Lindet Avenue side of President Wilson, Subes with reliefs Dideron New York Avenue side. Many isolated statues were placed on the terraces of the reflecting pool made by Felix Fevola : there are only lying to the Nymphs Louis Dejean , Leon Drivier and Augustus Gunot.
On 24 May 1937 , President Lebrun inaugurates the "Palace Museum of Modern Art." During the Universal Exhibition of 1937, it houses a retrospective of French art. The collections of the City of Paris are presented in the east wing from 1940 , while the National Museum of Modern Art opens its doors in the West Wing in 1942 , the real opening, however, did place in 1947. The building later took the name "Palais de Tokyo" in reference to the dock of the same name.
During the Second World War , the basements are used for storing goods Jews placed under receivership. In the 1950s , the east wing is the subject of important works that allow the opening in 1961 the Modern Art Museum of the City of Paris , consisting of works from the Petit Palais.
The collections of the National Museum of Modern Art left the west wing of the Palais de Tokyo in 1977 with the inauguration of the Centre Georges Pompidou The Palais de Tokyo / Site for Contemporary Creation In 1999 , Catherine Trautmann , Minister of Culture and Communications, decided to partially reopen the west wing of the building by planting a center for contemporary art, with emphasis on the emerging scene, including French and European. Part of the building Palais de Tokyo is so devoted to a 1901 association , chaired initially by the renowned contemporary art critic Pierre Restany and after his death in 2003 by Maurice Levy , chairman and CEO of Publicis , called Palais de Tokyo / Website contemporary . A competition was launched and in July 1999 , Nicolas Bourriaud and Jerome Sans are selected, appointed directors for a period of three years from the opening, which took place on January 22 2002 , Palais de Tokyo / Website Creation with contemporary was inaugurated by Lionel Jospin on January 21. The mandate of the two directors is extended until 2006. In February 2006, Marc-Olivier Wahler begins term as the new director for three years. Spaces redeveloped by architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal , Palais de Tokyo / Site for Contemporary Creation, is an interdisciplinary devoted to contemporary art in all its forms: painting , sculpture , design , fashion , video , film , literature , dance. The site, great shell curved, highly flexible, allows you to organize all types of exhibitions even ephemeral, installations or performances. The aspect of "rough around the edges" inside the building encourages an approach to art less formal than in the center of art or in more conventional museums. The place has also innovated by opening hours unusual for a cultural place: it is open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 to 0:00. Since 24 January 2004 , several jugglers and fire arts performers meet every Saturday evening on the plaza outside. An association (BurnCrewConcept) was formed to promote this common passion. The Palais de Tokyo / Site for Contemporary Creation is funded at about 50% by a grant from the Ministry of Culture , Delegation to the visual arts (1.8 million euros in 2006). The remaining funding comes from own resources: partnerships and sponsorships, ticket sales. The Palais de Tokyo / Site for Contemporary Creation in recent years has become a major venue in the French and international cultural landscape: it is one of art centers of Europe's most visited, with over 200,000 visitors per year , and a true place of emergence for contemporary art. In 2005 , a concession (2200 m) is given at the Seine to the company Climespace , dealer distribution network of water ice, which installed a plant for producing cold. In May 2009 the museum has partnered with three other museums to form near the Hill of museums. Currently occupying 7700 square meters on 22,000 square meters of the entire building (35%), the Palais de Tokyo / Site for Contemporary Creation could easily extend its hold over the entire building, the Palais de Tokyo to meet expectations its audience, the proliferation of artistic territories and the many projects initiated by artists themselves. However, other projects were under consideration, including the allocation of empty spaces of the building at the National Center for Art and Culture Georges Pompidou or organization associated with it, including who would organize monographic exhibitions of contemporary artists. Dominique de Villepin , Prime Minister, said in a speech at the FIAC on 10 October 2005 that: "In addition to
