Pad
The leg is a piece of clothing or armor that covers the bottom of the leg between the knee and ankle and is worn in pairs or not.
That of the gladiator was called ocrea.
The Japanese version is called kyahan. Worn over the tabi they were common among artisans, merchants, pilgrims or yamabushi. They served to prevent scratches and to facilitate the wearing of hakama or other loose clothing.
Other forms of leg warmers are suitable for protection against shocks in some sports like soccer or football.
When they are a fashion accessory, the pads are fabric , often knitted and look like socks without feet. They do not wear learned, but must make folds at the ankle. They are often associated with dance when they are brought to the training.
They were popularized in the 1980s , as fashion accessory, through films like Flashdance or Fame , as well as the wave of aerobics at the time.
