The Open Directory Project, Short ODP, more known as dmoz of addresses of sites , categorized in over 700,000 categories. Over 71 000 publishers participated in the project since its inception, nearly 8,000 are still active. The directory offers resources in 78 languages.

Summary

/ / Operation

The ODP is free. Adding a new site and use of data does not cost anything. Data can be downloaded and used free of charge, subject to compliance with the license and the addition of a code HTML allocation .

The ODP is run by editors who determine the proposed sites, store them in the appropriate category and add others according to their visits on the web. Anyone can apply to become an editor .

Many sites use ODP data, in addition to other services, most notably the Yearbook Google , the latter has the advantage of classifying pages according to their popularity ( PageRank ), or alphabetically ; by cons, unlike the dmoz directory, it does not provide links to the same category in other languages.

The Mozzie

Mozzie

A fun feature is the illustration dmoz categories by the image of the lizard dmoz. Its name comes from Mozilla , the mascot of Netscape in the early days of the browser , and makes an implicit reference to the monster Godzilla. The big scary beast gave way to nice lizard "Mozzie".

Dmoz editors are invited to use the image in order to deflect Mozzie and create an illustration of their favorite category. The images created are royalty free.

Beginning in September 2008, there were already more than 2300 Mozzie.

French Publishers Association (AEF)

To promote and create a more visible part dmoz French, French-language publishers have banded together in the Association of French-language publishers dmoz. At the same time as the new portal was created Mozzie incorporating the symbol of the Francophonie.

In the same movement, the French dmoz editors gathered in the Community on Orkut aef-dmoz. In early September 2008 they were 96 members of this community.

In June 2005 the dmoz aef-launched its own weblog, "Aef Dmoz Blog .
