Geography
Nola is the "county town" of Agro Nolan , a historical region divided between the modern provinces of Naples and Avellino.
History
Founded around -801 , the city was taken by the consul Petilius in -314. Besieged by Hannibal in the Second Punic War , it was stoutly defended by Marcellus , who twice defeated the Carthaginian general in its walls ( -216 and -215 ). The Emperor Augustus died at Nola.
In the fourth century , a Bordeaux, Paulinus of Nola , where he was bishop there developed the cult of his predecessor in the bishopric, the martyr St. Felix of Nola , writing his life and passion and building a religious complex around his grave.
It is St. Paulinus that would for the first time it installed the bells from churches, hence the name Latin campanae (and the word " bell "), named after the region where Nola, the Campania.
