A written document proving the existence of La Villette in 1198 under the name of Villa Nova Sancti Lazari (the new town Saint-Lazare), now in the Middle Ages Villette Saint-Lazare and Saint-stingy. The village was called Poitroville south, the Belleville today.

The integration of villages in Paris

The 19th is one of eight districts formed during the annexation of outlying districts to the city in 1860 ( Belleville , La Villette , as well as portions of the municipalities of Aubervilliers and Pantin ).

Demographics

In 2007, the borough had a population of 187 603 inhabitants of 679 hectares , or 27,629 inhabitants per square kilometer, making it the fourth arrondissement of Paris in population, behind the 15 th, 20 th and 18 th Districts. However the district is growing faster than others. It has gained 1.1% annually between 1999 and 2007, in 7 years a gain of 8% or about 14 000 inhabitants (a quarter of the increase in population of all of Paris) and the 19th district records the fastest growing population in the capital.

Major streets and roads

The two main avenues of the 19th arrondissement is the avenue of Flanders and the Avenue Jean-Jaures linked by the Place de Stalingrad. The first overlooks the Porte de la Villette , the second that of Pantin.

Monuments and places is

The Robert-Debre hospital , the Grande Halle de la Villette and the Cit des Sciences and industry are the three largest buildings in the district. The other most important buildings are the City of Music , the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris , the center of the Archives de Paris , the Lyce Henri-Bergson , the Municipal Conservatory and a cultural institution the 104 of the Street Aubervilliers.

The City of Music, the National Conservatory and the Zenith in Paris are located at the edge of La Villette Park , near the Great Hall. The Philharmonie de Paris , great symphonic concert hall seats 2,400, is expected to complete the City of Music in 2012.

The Parc des Buttes-Chaumont , created under Napoleon III.

The borough is home to two of the largest parks in Paris , the Parc de la Villette (first) and the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont (the third, the second being the Tuileries Gardens ).

Waterways

The 19th district is crossed by the Canal Saint-Denis and the Canal de l'Ourcq , which intersect at the Parc de la Villette.

At the Crimea Street , under the unique lift bridge in Paris, the Ourcq canal flows into the Bassin de la Villette , which communicates with the Canal Saint-Martin ( a href = "10e_arrondissement_de_Paris" alt = "10e arrondissement de Paris"> 10 th arrondissement). There is also the Fund Darse de Rouvray , the smallest channel Paris (250 m), located on the edge of La Villette Park and crossed the street-Adolphe Mille.
