The National Museum of Modern Art (MNAM) is dedicated to the art modern and contemporary of twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It is located in Paris in the Centre Georges Pompidou , where it occupies two floors (contemporary art on the 4th floor and modern art at the 5th floor). The collection contains nearly 70,000 works of which only a portion is exposed by rolling History

The National Museum of Modern Art has taken over from the old museum of Luxembourg was established in 1818 by Louis XVIII to host the works of living artists destined to join the Louvre ten years after their death . In 1937 he was installed at the Palais de Tokyo and 6 August 1942 he knows a partial opening with a third of the collection of deposits reduced the occupied zone. But it truly opens its doors after the war in 1947 , along with the museum Jeu de Paume , which then receives the Impressionists , already paid to the Louvre in 1929. In 1977 the National Museum of Modern Art is transferred to the new Centre Georges Pompidou leaving the Palais de Tokyo works post-Impressionist artists born before 1870 , which will join in 1986 the Muse d'Orsay.

Its initial fund has been constituted in part by donations from artists ( Picasso , Braque , Matisse , Chagall , Brancusi , etc..) and private collectors (Louise and Michel Leiris , Daniel Cordier ) as well as important recommendations. He has been regularly enriched by donations and acquisitions.

The museum is a department of the National Centre for Art and Culture Georges Pompidou. Since 1992 , he joined the Industrial Design Centre, founded by Franois Mathey and is officially called the National Museum of Modern Art - Industrial Design Centre (MNAM / ITC).

According to its statutes amended by Decree No. 92-1351 of 24 December 1992, its mission :

  • inventory, preserve, restore, enhance, present to the public and showcase art collections including the Centre Georges Pompidou has custody, in the field of visual arts , the arts graphics , the photography of experimental cinema , the video art , new media, industrial design, design of architecture since the beginning of the twentieth century , these collections also include holdings and archives concern;
  • present to the public, anywhere, any event aimed at spreading and deepening knowledge of art since the early twentieth century ;
  • to promote contemporary art in all its forms.

The MNAM / ITC includes:

  • conservation collections of art composed of the following services: the service of historical collections, the service of contemporary collections, the service of contemporary and prospective, graphic art firm, the firm of photography, the service experimental cinema , the service of new media , service restoration;
  • conservation of collections and architectural design, comprised of architecture and design services;
  • Service of the Library Kandinsky - Centre for Research and Documentation MNAM / ITC, which includes print sector, the area of documentation and archives sector;
  • service collections, together with management of production.

It also provides the secretariat of the Committee of acquisition and the secretariat of the Committee on loans and deposits for the Centre Georges Pompidou.

The museum ready by year 3000 works at the Centre Pompidou-Metz and museums around the world .

Library Kandinsky

Kandinsky's library is the special library of the museum dedicated to the art of the twentieth century. It finds its origin in the material gathered at the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild by the National Centre of Contemporary Art (CNAC) and has 200,000 books printed since the acquisition in 2006 of the library Destribats Paul , who made the fund the world's richest for the first half of the 20th century . It can accommodate up to 76 players on a surface of 390 sqm.
