History
Antiquity
Methymna fell under the domination of the Persians and took part in the revolt of Ionia. It is forced, and all the Ionian cities, providing warships to Darius I , then Xerxes I during the Median wars.
She enters with Mytilene , in the Delian League but denies Spartan alliance in 429 and did not revolt against Athens. Its territory is thus saved during the terrible reaction Athenian 428. It happens, however, under the influence after the Spartan battle Aigos Potamos in 405.
In the fourth century , Memnon of Rhodes , fighting against Alexander the Great , installed at the head of the city to 334 the tyrant Aristonicus , favorable to the Persians. However, it is taken prisoner the following year in Chios and Methymna rallied to the king of Macedonia.
Christian Period
As a Christian city, Methymna was then the seat of a bishopric.
A fortress was built around the thirteenth century for defense, both against the Franks as against Turks.
