Among these institutions is Healing the Children. From Cris Embleton, one of its founders, the Gibsons have given millions of dollars to fund medical treatment for children in need worldwide. The Gibson also supported the arts : they have funded the restoration of works of art from the Renaissance and gave several million dollars at NIDA , where Mel Gibson made his classes.

During the filming of Apocalypto in Mexico , Mel Gibson gave 1 million to the Rotary Club to build houses for people who lost their homes after heavy flooding in the region of Yucatan. The director said his gesture: "They have a lot of flooding there. It was like in Louisiana, in these regions further south. They have experienced very severe flooding and something like a million people were left displaced and bereaved. I always think that if you go into the country for someone else to make a movie, you do not go to just enjoy the scene. You bring a gift. It's like going into someone's house. You bring a bottle of wine, a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolate and it's the same kind of thing on a larger scale when you go into the country from someone and they will help you your movie. You help them first somehow or you give them a gift or you help them as you can. That's why we have somehow helped to damage related to flooding. "

It is particularly intervened to support Robert Downey Jr. , his former partner Air America , when he was incarcerated at Corcoran State Prison. The singer of rock Courtney Love thanked Mel Gibson for having saved her from a relapse into drugs after the actor has helped to rehabilitate. Mel Gibson has seen the singer in a hotel in Los Angeles when she was beginning to take drugs. Courtney Love later testified, "I said, slamming the door in his face. There were two drug addicts with me who would not go away, then nobody could take me back to the rehabilitation center. But thanks to Mel, two drug addicts have gone for a bite to eat with him because it was Mel Gibson. While Warren (Boyd, guardian) could get me and put me at center. "
