The Medjay (also Medji, Mazoyer, the Egyptian are the inhabitants of Medja a region of northern Sudan. This people has provided over the centuries many ancillary to the Egyptian army , so the term Medjay become a common name.
The first mention of Medjay back to the Old Kingdom , when they were enrolled among other peoples of Nubia under Pepi I..
During the Middle Kingdom , some Medjay are incorporated in the Egyptian army, part of the garrisons of the fortifications of Egyptian Nubia and patrolling in the desert as a sort of gendarmerie.
In early New Kingdom , others join forces Medjay Egyptian police. These units Nubian derives a new meaning to the term Medjay, referring to the police in general. The title "Medjay" was given by the Egyptians to the late New Kingdom.
