Mayan Astronomy

The astronomy Maya tends to connect the energies of the Earth with those of the Cosmos. It is based on the position of the planets.

The life of the Maya was set on the cosmos and the movement of celestial bodies they studied using the gnomon (our sundials). To this end, they have built observatories, some openings were run on the orbit of planets.

Astronomy buffs and brilliant mathematicians they were doing scientific calculations they were part of the " Codex "which remains today a few copies. Many were destroyed in the wake of the Spanish invasion.

With these observations, they could draw their different calendars , some of which were of great complexity and precision. They allowed them to count the time to determine both phases of the moon, the sun's position at the time of eclipses , the solstices and equinoxes , the cycles of nature. They were also used to predict their future and to set dates for major ceremonies. Their comments were directed mainly toward Venus , but also the Pleiades (which would Mayan cosmic origin), March , Jupiter , Saturn ...

The Milky Way appears to have played an important role among the Maya, the Milky Way is seen as the mythical road passing through the souls when they travel to the subterranean depths of the heavens beyond. According to their calculations based on astronomical positions of the planets, they found the crossing point of the ecliptic with the Milky Way. They called the Sacred Tree from its shape. This led them to conclude that when the sun comes in conjunction with the Sacred Tree is an opening to a level of development of spiritual consciousness, another dimension.

The next conjunction will be at the winter solstice of 2012, December 21. This date is the first day of a new cycle of 5200 years.
