Situation

Lestelle-Btharram is located east of the department, twenty-five kilometers southeast of Pau.

Access

The town is served by county roads 35, 226, 526 and 937 and by line SNCF Toulouse - Bayonne.

The town is crossed by the Gave de Pau , a tributary of the Adour and its tributaries, streams and Cacaret Batcrabre. The latter is itself fed on the town by the brook Abadie.

A tributary of the Ouzom , the Arrieucourt Creek, also runs on the town. The latter in turn is joined on the land-Lestelle Betharram by the brook Ges.

The place name appears in the forms Lestelle the bastide Lestelle (1335 , reversal of Beam ), Lestelle (1402 , censier Barn ), Stella (1429 , of censier Bigorre ), Lestelle (1544 , titles of Bearn ), Lastelle and Estelle (1544 respectively and 1675 , reversal of Beam ) and St. John's Lestelle (1675 , den of Lestelle ).

The toponym Betharram Lestelle hamlet, is mentioned in 1335 (reformation of Beam ) and appears in forms Guatarram (1335 , terrier Lestelle ) and the Chapel of Our Lady of Calvary Betarram (1644 , titles of the chamber of accounts Pau ).

His name Bearn is Lestelle-Btharram.

History

Paul Raymond notes that in 1385 thirty-two fires and Betharram. The two parishes were dependent on the bailiwick of Nay.

Lestelle is a country house created in 1335 on the territory of Asson (district Artigaux).

Lestelle-Btharram is a very ancient shrine and always busy (Sunday September 14 and following). Tradition says that in fact the Virgin to save a girl from drowning, handing him a branch under the bridge (btharram means "beautiful branch" in Bearn ) and more than eighty miracles have been recorded there in the seventeenth century. The sanctuary of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is a jewel of Baroque art in Barn.

In 1837 , Michel Garicoits founded the Collge Notre-Dame de Betharram, headquarters of the Congregation of Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus a dual purpose mission and teaching led her to spread around the world (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Cte d'Ivoire, China). It can be seen in the chapel's glass coffin and a piece of his thumb.

It was at Lestelle-Btharram then well known for its miracles, as Bernadette Soubirous had very often. She brought the rosary she held during the appearance of the Virgin at Lourdes.

Bridge Betharram (arch bridge span built in 1687) was registered historic monuments in 1925.

Religious heritage

  • Calvary and the Cross was rebuilt in 1841 on the ruins of the monuments of the seventeenth century to destroy the Revolution and whose stations had been identified as early as 1805. You can see the bas-reliefs of the Passion cycle sculpted by Alexandre Renoir and chapels built in eclectic style between 1841 and 1845.
  • The Church of St. John the Baptist ( XVIII century ) has furniture also classified.

Caves Betharram
The caves Betharram are a series of caves located in the border departments of Pyrnes-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrenees.
Their common interests the right of Asson and Lestelle-Btharram in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques and Saint-P-de-Bigorre in the Hautes-Pyrenees. They explore on foot, by boat and by train, the key to the formation of caves like.
