History

During the decline of the Han dynasty , the Wu region (south of the river Yangtze , near Nanking ) was under the control of warlord Sun Quan , who succeeded his brother Sun Ce and who paid allegiance to the Emperor Han Xiandai. But the emperor was at that time under the influence of Cao Cao. Unlike its competitors, Sun Quan has never had the ambition to become emperor of China. However, to counter Cao Pi of the Kingdom of Wei and Liu Bei of the Kingdom of Shu , Sun Quan declared himself emperor in 229 and founded the Wu Dynasty

The long reign of Sun Quan result of stability in southern China. The kingdoms of Shu and Wu was indeed linked to a military alliance to defeat the kingdom of Wei in the north. Thus, Wu was able to conquer territories north of the Yangtze , but none south of the Wei River.

Although more formidable than the Kingdom of Shu, Wu kingdom was conquered by the first emperor of the Jin Dynasty , Sima Yan in 280.

The kingdom of Wu was one who lived the longest of the Three Kingdoms.

Emperors of the Kingdom of Wu

The kingdom of Wu counted four emperors

  1. Sun Quan ( 229 - 252 ): Heir to the region Jiandong , hero of the Battle of Red Cliffs he founded the kingdom of Wu in 222 and self-proclaimed emperor in 229 to assert its independence from the Kingdom of Wei. The longevity of his reign due to the military alliance with the Kingdom of Shu who prevented the kingdom of Wei to conquer southern China.
  2. Sun Liang ( 252 - 258 ): Third son of Sun Quan, he became emperor at age nine. sent into exile in 258, his brother Sun Xiu succeeds him. Sun Liang dies mysteriously (suicide or poisoning) in 260.
  3. Sun Xiu ( 258 - 264 ): Under the influence of its general counsel Sun Chen, he has not actually ruled until the assassination of the latter. Victim of disease, he left his regular duties. He finally died in 264, while Sima Yan has just created the Jin Dynasty in the kingdom of Wei.
  4. Sun Hao ( 264 - 280 ): Grand son of Sun Quan, Sun Hao is proving to be a tyrant lawless. Losing the support of his people and a part of his army, the despot was overthrown in 280 by Sima Yan thus concluded that the reunification of China and ended the period of the Three Kingdoms.

Under the kingdom of Wu, southern China, considered the beginning of history as a jungle savage, became a shopping center, cultural and political role in China. For five centuries, during the period of Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms , the development of southern China has exceeded that of the north. Wu's achievements have marked the beginning of the cultural and political division between north and south China, which recur many times in Chinese history until modern times.

Wu entered the same in contact with the kingdom of Goguryeo by sending messengers by sea in 235 and 236 , but they refused any alliance Personalities

Important personalities lived and participated in the history of China during the Three Kingdoms period in the Kingdom of Wu is found the story of a great number of them in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
