After finding a camera in the Paris metro, he toured Europe to meet those who speak on the walls . Then he wondered about the vertical boundaries, walls and facades that shape cities . Observing the people he meets and listening to their message, it sticks their portraits in the streets, basements and rooftops of Paris.
Between 2004 and 2006, he realized portrait of a generation, portraits of young suburban he exhibits in large format. This illegal project becomes official when the mayor of Paris displays pictures of its buildings on JR . In 2007, with Marco he realizes Face 2 Face, "the biggest illegal photo exhibition ever created" . JR shows huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face to face in eight Palestinian and Israeli cities and on both sides of the security barrier. Upon his return to Paris he re-glue these portraits in the capital. For the artist, the artistic action is primarily a human project: "The heroes of the project are those on both sides of the wall, allowed me to stick on their house" .
In 2008, JR left for a trip on the occasion of International Women Are Heroes, a project in which he emphasized the dignity of women who are often the targets of conflict .

In these artistic actions, no stage does not separate the actors from spectators .
After being exposed in the same city of origin of the subjects of JR, the images travel from New York to Berlin from Amsterdam to Paris and everyone can interpret them in light of his own experiences . The anonymity of JR, and lack of explanation accompanying its huge portraits grimacing, allows him to leave space for an encounter between a subject / actor and a passer / interpreter, which is the essence of his work .

By meeting and photographing "old" to paste their pictures on the walls, JR imagined their wrinkles, furrows in their faces as the marks of time, traces of life that coincide with the history of the city .
These seniors are living testimony to him of a city changing faster than they age themselves. Each of their wrinkles and every day, according to him, entered into buildings, streets, in the faces of the old Cartagena, which offers a diverse architecture and divided .
