Summary

/ / Biography

After finding a camera in the Paris metro, he toured Europe to meet those who speak on the walls . Then he wondered about the vertical boundaries, walls and facades that shape cities . Observing the people he meets and listening to their message, it sticks their portraits in the streets, basements and rooftops of Paris.

Between 2004 and 2006, he realized portrait of a generation, portraits of young suburban he exhibits in large format. This illegal project becomes official when the mayor of Paris displays pictures of its buildings on JR . Once these initial projects, the artist says he wants to bring art into the streets: "In the street, I touch people who never go to the museum. "

In 2007, with Marco he realizes Face 2 Face, "the biggest illegal photo exhibition ever created" . JR shows huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face to face in eight Palestinian and Israeli cities and on both sides of the security barrier. Upon his return to Paris he re-glue these portraits in the capital. For the artist, the artistic action is primarily a human project: "The heroes of the project are those on both sides of the wall, allowed me to stick on their house" .

In 2008, JR left for a trip on the occasion of International Women Are Heroes, a project in which he emphasized the dignity of women who are often the targets of conflict .

JR is defined as an "urban artivist" , he created an art that appears on infiltrating the buildings of the Paris suburbs, on the walls of the Middle East on the broken bridges in Africa or in the favelas in Brazil and currently in Shanghai on buildings destined for destruction, as part of its project "The grooves of the city." In September 2010, are giant photographs of works from the Museum of Elyse in Lausanne that placards on the walls of Vevey for the festival "Images of Freedom". When shares of collage, communities participating in the artistic process. In Brazil, for example, children become artists for a week . In these artistic actions, no stage does not separate the actors from spectators .

After being exposed in the same city of origin of the subjects of JR, the images travel from New York to Berlin from Amsterdam to Paris and everyone can interpret them in light of his own experiences . The anonymity of JR, and lack of explanation accompanying its huge portraits grimacing, allows him to leave space for an encounter between a subject / actor and a passer / interpreter, which is the essence of his work .

20 October 2010, JR was awarded the TED Prize for 2011 for which he received a grant of 100,000 dollars coupled with "Congratulations to change the world."

JR is also director of music videos for rap artists and r'n'b.

Critical reception

On July 15, 2010, during a Radio in San Diego, California, artist Shepard Fairey says: "JR is now the street artist's most ambitious"

The newspaper Le Monde described her work as "indicative of humanity" .

Projects - 28 mm

JR does not consider either as "street artist, photographer or as" . To his projects, he uses the photo but also video, print on paper or canvas, urban spaces, publishing, and especially social relationships . "I would like to bring art into places unlikely, create communities with projects so large that they force the questioning. Try in the areas of tension such as the Middle East and Brazil that are highly publicized, creating images that provide other perspectives than those, reducing, global media. "

Portraits of a Generation

The portraits of a generation project is the first stage of 28 mm. After a wild first exhibition on the walls of the City of Groves, JR settles in the heart of this neighborhood and the nearby town of Forest in Clichy-sous-Bois , epicenters of the 2005 riots in French suburbs. Soon the first portraits were displayed on the walls of the last neighborhoods in the capital, in eastern Paris. These images provoke way, in the sense that they question the social and media representation of a generation that we can not see the gates of Paris , .

Face2Face

The Face2Face project tries to show that beyond what divides Israelis and Palestinians alike enough to be understood. JR - the picture - and Marco - in pen - set out to achieve, without permission , the largest exhibition of urban art in the world . Men and women Israelis and Palestinians, exercising the same profession, accept and crying with laughter, shout or make faces in front of JR's lens. Their portraits were posted face to face, in monumental formats on both sides of the separation wall and several surrounding cities.

This project is a demonstration images that art and laughter can challenge stereotypes .

The film directed by Gerard Maximin Faces on efforts in the Middle East by JR and Marco subsequently obtains numerous awards.

Women are Heroes

For this project, JR gets into fantastical places, those presented on television when it produces violent events, which one comes close but not part of any tour . Women are Heroes of women who encounter this sometimes death, which pass from tears to laughter, generous women who have nothing and who share it, dealing a painful past and the desire to build a happy future. In seeking what is common in their gaze, JR tries to get closer to what is universal: the human . This project allows him to keep the promise he made to these women make their travel history , .

Los Surcos of Cuidad

Project Los Surcos of Cuidad (the grooves of the city) is the testimony of the encounter between JR, the city of Cartagena and its older residents, who embody the memory of the city, marked by the scars of history , expand economic and sociocultural changes. By meeting and photographing "old" to paste their pictures on the walls, JR imagined their wrinkles, furrows in their faces as the marks of time, traces of life that coincide with the history of the city .

These seniors are living testimony to him of a city changing faster than they age themselves. Each of their wrinkles and every day, according to him, entered into buildings, streets, in the faces of the old Cartagena, which offers a diverse architecture and divided .

In 2010-2011, the project of "furrows of the city" includes Shanghai , China, as part of the Biennale of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts. Feature film

JR directs the Women Are Heroes project to film by making a feature film consists of images of the implementation of the photos. Through this documentary, the artist depicts the installation of these portraits of women in urban areas and the reaction of people.

He explains that "this film brings together images and words of the women interviewed, flows lives and experiences to create through art a different reality than the media" .

This first feature film is co-selected with the official selection of Cannes Film Festival 2010 . It is shown in the Critics' Week, competing for the Camra d'Or .

The artist is invited on the set of Grand Journal of Canal + in Cannes, May 19, 2009, to present his film. It is presented by Michel Denisot : "JR is a photographer and clandestine one of the greatest contemporary artists. He sticks his photos in the streets, on walls, on bridges, in the favelas or slums and tonight on the board of the Grand Journal. "
