Joya De Ceren

Joya de Ceren is an archaeological site 25 km from San Salvador , near San Juan de Opico and Las Flores, La Libertad Department , in west-central El Salvador. Discovered in 1976, he was listed in 1993 at the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

Joya de Ceren is called the Pompeii of America (El Salvador ). Indeed, as in Italy , is an eruption of the volcano about 600 Lomo Caldera which, burying the site under a layer of ash five meters, has maintained the only traces of current and important everyday life of the ancient Mayans. The discovery of a field of cassava in particular provided the first tangible evidence that the Maya of time cultivating this plant. Unlike the people of Pompeii, the Joya de Ceren was able to flee, probably alerted by earthquakes.
