Jin State

Jin History

Jin's birth back to the reign of King Cheng of Zhou ( -1110 ~ -1078) who attributed the stronghold of the Tang () in Shanxi his brother Shuyu ( ). It is the latter's son who changed the name of the fief in Jin. Branch of the Zhou royal family, the rulers of Jin bear the same surname as them, Ji (). They are Marquis (hou) up to -679 , then dukes (gong). The Marquis Wen ( ) supported the king Pingwang (), the first of Eastern Zhou in his start for the new capital Luoi ( ) and is rewarded.

In -745, the Marquis Zhao () attributes the stronghold of Quwo () to his uncle Chengshi ( ). This branch is gaining importance and Cheng Ji ( ), third heir of the fief, was appointed by King Duke of Zhou (Duke Wu Quwo ). Now it is his descendants who govern Jin. Fearing to turn the victim of a theft, his son the Duke Xian (-675 ~ -651 ) take to kill a good portion of his relatives and ministers appointed members of other clans, making Jin the only state where the clan of the sovereign is not in charge of important posts. Under his reign, defeated Jin Geng (), Huo (), Wei (), Yu () and the Barbarians Lirong ( ) and Chidi ( ). Under Duke Wen (-636 ~ -628 ), Jin Chu beats -632 to Chengpu () and receives the King Xiang of Zhou () the title of Hegemon (bazhu). Now, neither Qin nor Qi dare not attack, but the fight with Chu continues with ups and downs.

During the reign of Duke Ling (-620 ~ -607 ), Duke lost effective control of power to the Minister Zhao Dun () and other powerful clans. Despite an attempted takeover by the Duke Li (-580 ~ -573 ) in the late sixth century BC. AD seven families (shi ) dominate: Fan (), Zhongxing ( ), Zhi ( ), Han (), Zhao () and Wei (). To -453 , the last three have eliminated others. Their leaders Qian Han (), Ji Zhao () and Wei Si () are appointed by the Marquis of King Zhou -403. The last Duke of Jin is killed in -349 by clans and Zhao Han.

Capitals

The capital of Jin Yi was first () in the current Yicheng County () or Jin () in Linfen (). In -746 the capital appeared to secondary Quwo () in the current County Wenxi (). A century later, the Duke moved to Xian Jiang () east of Yi. The last capital was Xintian () in Houma () from the reign of Duke Jing ( -599 ~ -581 ).
