Summary |
Description
The Tinetto Island is the island that has the smallest dimensions among the three Gulf islands. It is the largest island in the South, at very short distance from the Island of Tino. In reality, Tinetto Island is just over an islet covered with vegetation. However, it retains the presence of a religious community in its small territory.
History
In the westernmost part of the island are the remains of a small chapel dating back probably to the sixth century while in the east are the remains of a building complex, consisting of a church two aisles with cells arranged for the monks, built in several phases during the eleventh century and finally destroyed by the Saracens. A few meters south of the island, on top of a half-submerged rock, stands a statue of Stella Maris, about two meters high.
Access
Unlike Tino , Tinetto Island is accessible to city dwellers who can dock on the island and halt.
Sights
- On the island of Tinetto is a very rare endemic reptile, the lizard Podarcis muralis tinettoi.
- For several years, the island is home to a colony of gulls which become very aggressive during the birth, making access to the island impossible.
