The magazine published its 30th anniversary in May 2008 a special issue which is a retrospective of events occurring in the world and the progress of the discipline during this period. There are also addressed future challenges for history and historians.

Jean-Noel Jeanneney addresses the upheaval caused by the Internet , mentioning the different issues of this media: The bulk of information, speed of navigation that does not interfere with the reflection, the variety must not be endangered by the concentration of operators or by the ranking of media according to their attendance. He doubted the possibility of establishing the truth about the only principle of collective correction of errors by users. It reaffirms the vital role of validation performed by the editorial boards and selection in scientific publications.

Pierre Assouline move beyond talking about the history of France both in the choice of studies at the level of the amplitude of the scope of the analysis. The magazine devotes its special issue in July / August in Japan in 2008 and Russia in 2009.

Reviews

For the historian Gerard Noiriel , History has lost its status as a "lay journal of high level" and stressed that "the scholarly dimension of his original approach has virtually disappeared." Noting that "we do not find in history the list of courses from the College de France, but the programs on television," he adds, "most issues are directly related to current events, and the normative posture intellectual journalism was forced upon the scientific understanding .

The association Acrimed criticized the special issue dated May 2008: "First, the entire field of historical studies revolves around the magazine itself, its employees and the initiatives it supports. Then the historical debates boil down to the positions of members of the writing or those who are close, the critique of these positions are barely mentioned or immediately disqualified . According to this article, History has a clear preference for historians such as Franois Furet and Stphane Courtois , known for their anti-Marxist or anti positions. Theses Marxist historians like Michel Vovelle or Soboul Albert , are poorly represented. This discrimination results in a denial of the debate during the presentation of the controversy was initiated by the publication in 1997 of the Black Book of Communism , the historian is supposed to criticize a judge and jury argument, which is problematic from the point of view of scientific research .

In addition, Acrimed considers that, like other newspapers in the group to which it belongs, the magazine produced a liberal discourse .
