central historical square of the cathedral overlooking the Town Hall and its loggia. He is admitted to the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996.
Small village of origin Etruscan , in the center of Val d'Orcia , it is perched on a hill in perfect harmony with the surrounding rural landscape.
In 1459 , during a visit to Pienza (then named Corsignano), Pope Pius II, found his home village and its inhabitants in a state of extreme poverty. He decided to develop an urban space adapted to the happiness of its people, and make it his summer residence. The architect Bernardo Rossellino was responsible for the overall scheme of the city - he founded on the principles of urban planning developed by Leon Battista Alberti between 1459 - 1463. His death in 1464 put a premature end to operations: it has had time to build a papal palace, a cathedral and a place.
Over the centuries, its urban fabric has undergone very little change, in addition, are still present from the beginning, many wells and fountains, features decorations scraping on the walls and part of the medieval ramparts.
