Getafe is a city of Spain located 13 kilometers south of Madrid , in a flat area of the (Central Plateau). This is one of the most populated and industrialized of the metropolitan area of the capital. Getafe is also known for its military base, one of the oldest in Spain, for the Cerro de los ngeles, considered the geographical center of the Iberian Peninsula and the Universidad Carlos III, whose headquarters is in the city.
The proximity of Madrid Getafe has extensive industrial development during the twentieth century, causing an increase of the population now stands at 167 164 inhabitants and turning it into a dormitory town. Population growth has forced the government to build numerous pathways to be significantly expand public services and build new neighborhoods.
Summary |
In the Middle Ages, within the current municipal area of Getafe, cohabiting several outposts, one of the largest ALARN was located near the present town. In 1326, the inhabitants of these villages united in a village near the royal road linking Madrid to Toledo. This new village saw the name of which derives from Xatafi Jata Arabic term meaning "long enough". It was inferred that the term Xatafi referred to the main street of the village who was none other than the royal way. Xetafe therefore means "long road". This original name evolved, taking successively forms Xetafi, Jetafee, Jetaphe, Jetafe and, finally, Getafe.
History
It is possible to consider the history of Getafe in three distinct periods. In the first, ranging from prehistory to 1326, various cities and villages have occupied the municipality, even if Getafe did not exist as a village. The second period began in the fourteenth century and ends in the twentieth century is characterized by the formation of the town of Getafe and its slow development with single structures. The final phase is the post-war era that saw Getafe stop being an agricultural village and rural to become a great industrial city through significant growth in population, commercial and industrial activities and urbanized area.
