Gallery
The word gallery (n. XIV century ) has its origins in Italian and Latin which means "church porch." The ninth edition of the dictionary of the French Academy gives the following definition: "Passage provided inside or outside a building to serve the movement or walk. "It may refer to:
- a gallery in architecture ;
- a shopping mall or commercial ;
- an art gallery ;
- a gallery in computer science: an ordered set of thumbnail images;
- a gallery in mining : a tunnel dug to exploit the mineral resources of the subsoil;
- a gallery in pedology : tunnels dug by many burrowing animals in the soil or sediment or other substrate (the wood species for wood-boring or saproxylic , shells of shellfish , etc..), sometimes called " dens "for terrestrial animals that dig as a bed for sleeping, rearing young or hibernating. Various marine organisms and some terrestrial insects ( termites ) construct burrows in the soil, rocks, leaves or bark of trees for shelter from sun and predators.
- a gallery of biochemical identification in bacteriology to characterize the species of bacteria.
- a device that attaches to the roof of a car and is designed to attach luggage (France).
Homophone
- The gallery is a moth of a similar type of ringworm, and harmful to bees.
Note spelling
It is therefore incorrect to write "gallery" in French.
