The authorship of the name Figuration is attributed to the Nice artist Ben Vautier.

Initiator of the major artistic events involving the founding artists of Figuration Libre, Herv Perdriolle is regarded as the promoter of this movement, and Bernard Lamarche-Vadel which brings together writers Figuration Libre in a famous exhibition finish in style. Herv Perdriolle is the author of "Figuration Libre, an introduction to mass media culture", published by Editions-South Axis in 1984.

This movement, widely publicized in the 1980s , has grown up around major figures as Robert Combas , Herv Di Rosa , Richard Di Rosa , Remi Blanchard , Francois Boisrond , Louis Jammes. Between 1982 and 1985 , these artists exhibit several times with their U.S. counterparts: Keith Haring , Jean-Michel Basquiat , Kenny Scharf , Tseng Kwong Chi , among others, Crash (exhibitions in New York, London, Pittsburgh, Paris .. .). In 1985 the movement is represented in the Paris Biennale.

Late 1960s

Combas and Herv Di Rosa attend workshops drawings of the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Sete , they are both from. They do not know yet. Visual artists such as Peter Francis , then practice in Ste figuraton unbridled even on media as diverse as the costumes, jousting shields, classical paintings or postcards. In 1976 , Combes, Di Rosa brothers and Catherine Brindel (known as Kitty) make friends around the punk movement. In 1978, Herve Di Rosa is admitted to the National School of Decorative Arts , where he first met Francis Boisrond. The following year, Herve Di Rosa, Robert and Kitty Combas Brindel create Bato newspaper from a hundred copies, which lasts four numbers. It consists of collages, objects in plastic, photocopies. 1981

Combas and Herv di Rosa make their first international exhibition (Galerie Eva Keppel Dsseldorf, Galerie Swart, Amsterdam). The art critic Bernard Lamarche-Vadel organizes his loft in the Paris exhibition " Finish in style "in which Di Rosa, and Boisrond Combas and Jean-Michel Alberola , Jean-Charles Blais , Jean-Franois Maurigi, Catherine Viollet and Remi Blanchard.

The critic Otto Hahn organizes the exhibition "Statements New York 82. 1983
