Epigraphy
Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions made on non-putrescible materials such as stone (known as a "stone inscriptions), clay or metal. This science seeks to date them, place them in their cultural context, to translate and determine what information can be derived.

History of epigraphy
The epigraphy has grown steadily since the Middle Ages. Here are some famous epigraphists: Dhul-Nun al-Misri (786-859), Abu al-Hasan al-Hamadani ( 945), Ibn Wahshiyya (tenth century), Shen Kuo (1031-1095), Georg Fabricius (1516 - 1571), August Zumpt Wilhelm (1815-1877), Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903), Emil Hbner (1834-1901), Ren Cagnat (1852-1937), Franz Cumont (1868-1947) and Robert Louis (1904-1985 ).

- Greek: the IGC (Corpus Inscriptionum Grcarum) became the Inscriptiones Graecae
- Latin: CIL ( Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum ), established by Theodor Mommsen in the nineteenth century , and constantly updated since it includes all the Latin inscriptions found in the world.
