Elea ( Velia to the Romans , in Latin ) was a Greek city on the coast Tyrrhenian , in Campania , near the Gulf of Salerno. Here was founded the Eleatic school , school of philosophy founded by Parmenides and Xenophanes and followed by Zeno of Elea and Melissa.
From an administrative standpoint, the current Velia is a frazione of the town of Ascea , ASCE-Velia since 2003 ( Salerno ) and has about a thousand inhabitants. Velia should not be confused with Novi Velia , a town that is near.
History
Elea was founded around 535 BC. BC by the Greeks Phocaea fleeing the invading Persians in Asia Minor. The creation of the city, like others, reported by Strabo in his Geography, and by Herodotus. These settlers joined the other colonies of Italy that formed the South Magna Graecia. Elea remained independent long as many cities in Italy. Around 275 BC. BC , she became the ally of Rome. The city was abandoned in the Middle Ages. And today, the archaeological site is located in the town of Ascea in the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano.
