Biography
He arrived in Rome in his twenties and is under the protection of an enlightened patron, Cardinal Montalto (later in 1585 Pope Sixtus V ). It is illustrated by the work of the organization of the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and the tomb of Nicolas IV , at St. Mary Major between 1570 and 1580. Sixtus V in 1586 entrusted the task to draw up the obelisk we see today on the place Saint-Pierre de Rome , which was then on the side of the basilica of St. Peter's , half buried under the ruins. With that experience and always at the request of Sixtus V, he recovered in 1587, the obelisk placed by the Emperor Augustus at Circus Maximus and stands on the Piazza del Popolo. He set two other obelisks, the square of Santa Maria Maggiore and Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano and executes the layout of the place of the Quirinal.
He collaborates in the work of Giacomo della Porta and Rome also owed to the papal palace Montecavallo , the Quirinal , the Vatican Library , the Acqua Felice fountain which brings water from a distant mountain about 20 kilometers.
On the death of Sixtus V, Fontana disgrace is accused by jealous enemies, to have misappropriated large sums of money and is forced to leave Rome. He retired to Naples , is appointed king's engineer, and built the fountain medina and the Royal Palace, which works sufficient reputation.
His brother, architect of lesser importance, is Giovanni Fontana (1546 - 1614).
