Dirce
In Greek mythology, Dirce (in ancient Greek / is the wife of Lycos , regent of Thebes.
Myth
Lycos was imprisoned when his niece Antiope to have been seduced by Zeus , Dirce abused her. But Zeus rescued one day Antiope. During her flight, she found her two son, Amphion and Zethus , which had been collected by the shepherds following their abandonment by Lycos. They then went to Thebes, killed Lycos and tied Dirce to the tail of a bull untamed, who took on the rocks where she was in pieces. The gods, moved by her misfortune, turned into a source that bore his name and which flowed near Thebes.
According to Euripides , Dirce and Lycos will leave behind a son, also named Lycos.
Frescoes depicting the torture of Dirce were found at Herculaneum in the house's atrium mosaic, and Pompeii in the house of Vetii. The Farnese Bull , marble statuary group kept at the National Museum of Naples , also illustrates the punishment of Dirce.
