Cep Torture Instrument
The vine was a torture device.
It was a piece of wood in which it was keeping the feet of a seated tortured, often visible to everyone.
The vines Romans had several holes, which could remove the legs considerably convicted of torturing him further.
He is quoted in the Old Testament with different words Hebrew with the idea of twisting and it appears that the person you put in these stocks went maintained bent or twisted. It is possible that the vine immobilized legs, hands and neck, and perhaps it was combined with the pillory for fixing the legs and neck and arms of the tortured. The prophet Jeremiah was in the victim.
Some saints have suffered that martyrdom: St. Quentin and Saint-Vincent (source Mandrake )
