The Bronx is one of five constituencies ( boroughs ) of the City of New York to U.S. (including Manhattan , Brooklyn , Queens and Staten Island ). It coincides with the County of Bronx administrative division of the New York State , but does not work like other counties in the state. In 2000 , its population was 1,332,650 inhabitants. Its name comes from Jonas Bronck, emigrant, Sweden was the first to colonize this area History

Originally the land is inhabited by Siwanoy, a Native American clan, who founded several villages .

The territory of the Bronx originally belonged to the Westchester County and had four cities: Westchester, Yonkers, Eastchester and Pelham. In the nineteenth century , the neighborhood welcomes immigrants Protestants , Catholics ( Irish and Italian ) and a Black ethnic community outcome of Haiti and West Africa. In 1846, a new town, West Farms, was created by detaching itself from Westchester. Other subdivisions have emerged: Morrisiana in 1855 (after West Farms) and Kingsbridge in 1873 (after Yonkers).

In 1874, the western part of the current Bronx (Kingsbridge, Morrisania and West Farms) was transferred to the County of New York, followed in 1895 in Westchester and some parts of Eastchester and Pelham and City Island in 1896. The first subway line was installed in 1904. After annexation by the City of New York, these neighborhoods from Westchester County in 1914 banded together to form the county of Bronx. The 1920s saw the construction of Yankee Stadium. After the Second World War , the renovation of several neighborhoods in Manhattan (slum clearance) causes an influx of blacks and Puerto Ricans in the neighborhood already known for its social problems. The Bronx is now one of the most sensitive of New York, where various traffic sully his reputation.

Geography

The Bronx is the borough 's most northerly of the City of New York and the only one located on the continent, as Manhattan and Staten Island are islands in its own right and that Brooklyn and Queens occupy part of Long Island. The Bronx is located in southern Westchester County. It also includes several small islands in the East River and Long Island Sound. Its total surface area is 149 square kilometers, including 109 square miles of land area and 40 sq km of water. The Bronx is the only district in New York to have a freshwater river: The Bronx River. Although it is the third densest county in the country after Manhattan and Brooklyn, about a quarter of its land area is occupied by parks, a 28 km , which, in the north, the largest of New York, Pelham Bay Park and Van Cortlandt Park and the western shore of the Bronx River, Woodlawn Cemetery , one of the largest cemeteries in the city.

Most streets are numbered from the Bronx, but unlike in Brooklyn and Queens, the system extends the Bronx from Manhattan. Thus, the street numbering begins at 135.

The Bronx is served by several subway lines, most airlines.

The cost of housing is much lower than in Manhattan but there are also posh neighborhoods, including Riverdale and Country Club Estates.
