Commentary
Beat Street is one of the first films about Hip-Hop, after Wild Style and Style Wars. Produced by MGM and Harry Belafonte with the clear intention to be the emblematic film of a musical generation, Beat Street hesitates between social fresco (as Rocky and Saturday Night Fever ) and the introductory movie ( Flashdance , Dirty Dancing , Fame ). Despite a scenario a bit politically correct , despite the aesthetic image, despite some outlandish ideas of embodiment (the graffiti were made by painters on location, for example) and despite the presence of professional actors unrelated to the world of Hip Hop such as Rae Chong and Mary Alice Down, Beat Street manages to show the essence of Hip-Hop in its most exciting. The invisible boundaries that separate those "from above" ( Manhattan ) as "those from below" (South Bronx) are very well regarded.
