The Bay of Naples is located on the southwest coast of Italy ( province of Naples , Campania ). It opens to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
It is bordered on the north by the cities of Naples and Pozzuoli , close to the east of Vesuvius , and south by the peninsula of Sorrento and its main town Sorrento ; Peninsula separates the Gulf of Salerno. The islands, mostly volcanic origin, of Capri , Ischia and Procida , are located in the Gulf and quite well connected to the mainland by a system of ferries.
The area was a major destination resort under the Roman Empire , as seems to prove the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum (eruption of Vesuvius in 79 ).
