Basilect

In linguistics , in the terminology proposed by Derek Bickerton and more generally in sociolinguistics , the basilect is the variety of a language furthest from its prestige variety, the acrolect. When is this reality on a differential scale of linguistic forms, and the basilect acrolect occur at both ends of a continuum. In this balance of power, the basilect tends to settle on the basis of a maximum deviation from the acrolect.

When basilect differ enough in their Acrolect pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, they can give birth to languages "news." For example, basilect of Vulgar Latin diverged considerably from their acrolect, the classical Latin , and developed ultimately to give birth to the various Romance languages.

This phenomenon of diglossia , which has almost disappeared in France , is still alive and well in regions such as Flanders ( Dutch - Flemish ), the Scandinavia ( Rigmoll - Volktaal ), and Italy and has long existed in Europe (Latin-Romance ). In medieval France, Latin was sometimes presented not as a foreign language but as a different register of language.
